Poverty in America

It’s amazing to me that there’s such a tight correlation between poverty and income inequality, and so little of one between poverty and federal taxation (much like educational quality seems to be tightly correlated with the strength of teachers’ unions)… and yet, the folks who suffer from the MOST poverty seem to be the folks fighting the hardest against doing something about it. Why is that, do you suppose?
