In Florida during the first month this ridiculous law was in effect, drug tests cost the state about $1140. Benefits they didn't pay (interestingly, if an applicant FAILS a drug test, another person can be declared the "guardian" and have ANOTHER drug test, and assuming that they pass it, the state STILL pays out a TANF benefit. Notice, too, that these drug tests are not completed at state-run health Department Clinics, but at private, for-profit "approved vendors." It merely prevents people who desperately NEED help from accessing it. You have to PAY for the drug test. Use your head-- if you are so desperate for help that you're willing to degrade yourself and beg for a few hundred dollars a month, are you likely to have $30 cash lying around to pay for a drug test? It's plainly a barrier to applying for assistance. It's like charging $22 for an ID, so that you can vote.
