We here at NikFlorida.org support progressive fact-finding causes, like factcheck.org and mediamatters for America, by trying to keep the truth in political debate. We donate all monies above the necessary maintenance of this blog to them, in fact.
Meanwhile, we know, of course, that the IRS’s statistical data that conservatives like to tout as showing that Republicans are more generous charitable contributors than Democrats simply indicates that Republicans are more likely to document and deduct their charitable contributions, and that the bulk of what the IRS treats as “charitable contributions” are protestant church offerings, and people who are registered Republicans are much more likely to be members of a church than their Democrat counterparts. Nevertheless, we still would like to be ahead of the curve, so to speak, in raising money for charities.
So, to that end, there is a “donation” button in the left sidebar of this site, entitled with a “featured charity” headline. We select those charities on the basis of timeliness and the good work they do. Unlike Catholic Charities, we do not claim to do so without respect to those organizations’ espoused beliefs. For example, we won’t raise money for the American Red Cross, because they continue, twenty-five years later and in the face of ongoing correction and criticism, to ask a misleading question on their HIV screening instrument for blood donations: “Are you a man who has, even once, had sex with another man since 1977?” That instrument does not ask about frequent, unprotected heterosexual relations, a serious HIV risk, and perpetuates the untrue myth that HIV is a homosexual disease, which it obviously is not.
In any case, we select non-profits that do good work, and whose efforts we laud. We often feature them here with unique pages. If you’d like to suggest a new charity for us to consider, please email us at charity@nikflorida.org. And please donate. We appreciate it, and they appreciate it. If you need a receipt, in proper Republican fashion, to document your donation to a tax-deductible non-profit, and the PayPal receipt you receive by email isn’t sufficient, please request one. We’ll be happy to provide it to you.”
