Today is not really Shrove Tuesday, or Fosnacht Day, or Malasada Day, better known as Pancake Day. The French like to call it Mardi Gras, or “fat Tuesday,” the last feast day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of a liturgical fast in which sugar, eggs, and other rich stuff were traditionally forbidden.
